The Board of Management of St Mary’s Secondary School advises parents that the school will be closed on Thursday, October 27th. The closure is as a result of a nation-wide industrial action by members of the ASTI. The Board regrets the necessity to close on that day. However, it will not be in a position to discharge its responsibilities with regard to the care of students in its charge. Please note that the school reopens on Friday, Oct 28th. All students are expected on that day.
Thursday Oct 27th is one of a series of seven strike days announced by the ASTI as part of its campaign to restore equal pay for newly qualified teachers. The other proposed dates are TUES NOV 8TH, WED NOV 16TH, THURS NOV 24TH, TUES NOV 29TH and TUES and WED DEC 6TH AND 7TH . The school will be open on these dates if there is a successful outcome in the talks between the Depart and the ASTI.
Separately, the ASTI intends to withdraw cooperation of its members in the daily supervision of break times and the cover for teachers who are absent. St Mary’s Board of Management meets on Thursday 20th October and on Tuesday 25th October to review the feasibility of opening after the mid-term break as teachers withdraw from supervision and substitution. The Board is completing a comprehensive risk assessment of opening the school without appropriately trained and vetted supervisors and without a recognised system to oversee the supervision and substitution. The expectation is that the school will not reopen until there a satisfactory resolution between the Department of Education and Skills and the ASTI.
Parents should continue to check this website to see if there is any last-minute change to the planned closure on Thursday 27th and, in particular, for updates relating to the re-opening date after the mid-term break.
